About Iceland Roads
An independent project that interprets official Icelandic road and weather data into clear driving recommendations. Not affiliated with Vegagerðin or Vedur.is.
What this is
Iceland Roads is an independent project that combines data from multiple official Icelandic sources into a single, clear view of driving conditions across Iceland. It translates raw meteorological codes and road condition data into plain-English answers to the question every driver asks: should I drive this road today?
The site is not affiliated with Vegagerðin (Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration), Vedur.is (Icelandic Met Office), or any government agency. It is an independent aggregation and interpretation layer over publicly available data.
Who runs this
Iceland Roads is built and maintained by Stefán, an Icelander based in Iceland - the same roads this site reports on are the ones he actually drives, in the same weather. It's an independent one-person project, not a media company: the goal is that the interpretation layer (“should I drive this today?”) reflects real local driving experience, not just re-published feeds.
It's also a family affair: my wife runs Dream Travel Iceland, a separate business building custom itineraries and guiding trips in person. No money changes hands between the two sites - I just think it's worth mentioning, in the interest of the same honesty this whole page is about.
How we verify data
Every source below is polled automatically every 10–15 minutes, and each page shows when its data was last updated. Status changes for highland F-roads are archived as they happen, so historical claims (like observed opening dates) come from our own recorded readings of Vegagerðin data - never from guesswork. When our interpretation and an official source could disagree, the official source wins, and every page links to it.
Data sources
All data comes from official and open sources. Each source is polled every 10 minutes and cached at the edge for fast loading.
