About F-roads

F-roads (fjallvegir / mountain roads) are unpaved highland routes that require 4x4 vehicles. “Open · 4×4 only” means the road is passable for mountain vehicles - the normal open state for an F-road. They typically open in late June after snow melt and close in September or earlier. “Usually opens” estimates come from Vegagerðin's 2021–2025opening record and are guides only - each year's date is set after a physical inspection. River crossings are common. Always check road.is and SafeTravel.is before attempting an F-road. Rental car agreements often prohibit 2WD vehicles on F-roads.

Frequently asked questions

Which F-roads are open right now?

36 of 38 F-roads are currently drivable end to end (38 reporting live data): 36 with clear conditions. Every F-road requires a 4x4 whatever its condition. A further 1 road has an impassable section but is open along the rest, so it cannot be driven through. See the full breakdown and map above for which specific roads.

When do F-roads in Iceland open?

Most Iceland F-roads open between late May and mid-July and close again in September, though the exact date is set by Vegagerðin (the Icelandic Road Administration) each year after a physical inspection of snowpack and river conditions - it varies year to year. Kjölur (F35) and Kaldidalur (F550) are typically first; remote interior crossings like Sprengisandur (F26) and Askja (F88) usually open latest. See the opening-dates comparison for typical windows per road.

Do I need a 4x4 for F-roads in Iceland?

Yes. Every F-road in Iceland requires a 4x4 vehicle, regardless of current conditions. This is Icelandic law, not a suggestion. Rental companies void insurance for 2WD vehicles on F-roads, and roadside rescue costs thousands of euros. Even in summer, F-roads involve river crossings, loose gravel, and uneven surfaces that exceed 2WD clearance.

What are the best F-roads to drive in Iceland?

It depends on what you're after. Kjölur (F35) and Kaldidalur (F550) are the easiest highland crossings, suitable for confident 4x4 drivers with no river fords. Sprengisandur (F26) is the classic highland route, longer and more remote but with no major river crossings. F-road 208 (Fjallabaksleið nyrðri) reaches Landmannalaugar and involves river crossings. Askja (F88) and Landmannalei (F225) are among the most remote. Always check current conditions before departing.

Can I drive F-roads in a rental car?

Yes, but only with a 4x4 rental. Most Icelandic rental companies offer 4x4 vehicles (Dacia Duster, Suzuki Vitara, Toyota Land Cruiser, etc.). Check the rental agreement carefully: some companies exclude F-road driving entirely, others charge extra insurance. CDW (Collision Damage Waiver) does not cover water damage from river crossings. Gravel protection is essential. Book 4x4 rentals well in advance for summer travel.
