A serious highland expedition: from Route 1 east of Mývatn, take F88 (two river crossings, including Lindaá) or the longer but gentler F905/F910 via Möðrudalur. Real 4x4 only, typically open mid-July to September. It's about three hours each way off the Ring Road to the Drekagil hut area, then a 35-minute walk to the caldera and Víti crater. Check F-road status and fuel up fully - there are no services.
