Take Route 1 north through the Hvalfjörður tunnel to Borgarnes, then Route 54 onto the Snæfellsnes peninsula - about 2½ hours, paved throughout, though the north-coast section has narrow stretches and blind curves. Park only in the paid Kirkjufellsfoss car park on the inland side of the road; the classic photo of mountain and falls is a two-minute walk from it.
