Getting there

From Egilsstaðir follow Route 1 west, then Route 923 up the Jökuldalur valley. For the easy view, park at Grund farm (west bank) and take the stairs to the viewing platform. For the classic basalt-column angle you need the east bank: cross at Klaustursel bridge and walk about 5 km each way on a gravel track. Route 923's last section is gravel - slow but 2WD-friendly in summer.
