Getting there

Ten minutes east of Höfn: follow Route 1 toward the Almannaskarð tunnel, then take the signed Stokksnes turn-off - a 4.5 km gravel spur, fine for any car driven gently. The mountain and black dunes sit on private land; entry is paid at the Viking Café, which also has the parking. Conditions are at their most photogenic (and windiest) in winter - take the wind forecast seriously here.
