Driving in Iceland in April
April is the in-between month: lowland roads clear up, days stretch to 16+ hours, and prices and crowds are low - but the highlands stay shut, the aurora fades after mid-month, and late-season snowstorms still happen. A great-value month for the Ring Road's southern half.

What’s open and driveable
The Ring Road is generally in good shape, and by late April most paved roads nationwide are simply wet. Mountain passes and the north can still see snow and temporary closures. Gravel roads emerge from winter soft and pothole-ridden - the spring thaw ('aurbleyta') brings weight restrictions on some, marked on the map.
Typical conditions
Freeze–thaw is the theme. Days are often mild and pleasant; nights still dip below zero, so early-morning ice persists in shade. April can still deliver one proper snowstorm, especially in the north - but it melts in days rather than sticking. Wind remains a year-round companion.
April driving tips
- Watch for spring weight-restriction signs (aurbleyta) on gravel roads - the roadbed is genuinely soft.
- Puffins return to the south coast cliffs (Dyrhólaey, Reynisfjall) in the second half of April.
- This is the cheapest comfortable month to rent a car and find rooms along the south.
- Studded tyres are only legal until April 15 - most rentals switch to non-studded or summer tyres right after, so a late cold snap can catch you on less grip than earlier in winter.

Are Iceland's roads clear of snow in April?
Lowland paved roads, mostly yes - especially in the south and west and increasingly so through the month. Mountain passes, the north and the east can still get fresh snow, and all highland F-roads remain closed.
Is April too late for the northern lights in Iceland?
Early April still works: nights are dark enough until roughly mid-month. By late April the sky never gets fully dark and the season is over until late August.
