Driving in Iceland in May
May might be Iceland's best-kept driving secret: virtually endless daylight, fully driveable lowlands, green valleys, waterfalls at full melt - and half the traffic of summer. Only the highlands are still off the menu.

What’s open and driveable
Everything paved is open in normal conditions, including the Westfjords' main roads - May is when that region realistically joins the itinerary. Gravel roads are drying out. Snow lingers only on the highest passes, and a rogue late-May flurry melts within hours.
Typical conditions
Statistically one of the drier, calmer months. Rivers and waterfalls run big with snowmelt, lupines start painting the roadsides purple in the south, and long evenings mean you can drive 'after dinner' in daylight. Wind and rain still visit - this is Iceland - but May weather rarely rearranges an itinerary.
May driving tips
- This is the earliest month a full Ring Road self-drive is comfortably low-risk - and it's cheaper than June.
- The Westfjords open up: Dynjandi and Látrabjarg (puffins arrive by May) become realistic.
- Book Mývatn and Jökulsárlón-area rooms early - May demand is rising every year.
- Don't plan highland detours yet; even 'open' early F-roads carry serious river crossings in melt season.
Common questions
Is May a good month for the Ring Road?
Yes - arguably the sweet spot. All of Route 1 is reliably open, daylight is nearly unlimited, and traffic and prices sit well below the June–August peak. You give up only the highlands and the aurora.
Are F-roads open in May?
Almost never. The earliest roads open in very late May in dry years; most open between mid-June and early July. Rental agreements typically ban F-road driving before official opening regardless.
