Right off Route 1, 123 km east of Reykjavík - the falls are visible from the Ring Road, with the turn onto Route 249 clearly signed. Parking is paid (machine on site). The famous walk behind the curtain is usually closed in winter when spray turns the path to sheet ice; the neighbouring hidden falls, Gljúfrabúi, are 600 m further along the same path.
Beautiful valley between glaciers Eyjafjallajökull, Mýrdalsjökull, and Tindfjallajökull. Lush green, river crossings. 4x4 required.
