On Route 1, 30 km past Seljalandsfoss at the village of Skógar - the exit is signed and the falls sit a few hundred metres off the road. Parking is free. The staircase to the top viewpoint (and the start of the Fimmvörðuháls trail) is climbable year-round but icy in winter. Fuel and food at the small station in Skógar or back at Hvolsvöllur.
