Getting there

From Reykjavík take Route 1 east to Selfoss, then Route 35 north past Geysir - or make it the classic Golden Circle loop by going out via Route 36 and Þingvellir. Paved the whole way, with two large free car parks (the upper one has the café and shortest walk). Doable year-round; in winter the path down to the lower viewpoint gets a coating of frozen spray, so bring grippy shoes.
